How to Check the 12V Battery's Charge
Use a Multimeter to check the voltage of the battery.
Knowing the voltage of the battery is the best way to determine the state of charge.
Before you begin, gather the following:
- Safety gear as required by your job site
- Multimeter
To check the 12V battery charge:
- Make sure the tractor is in Neutral with the parking brake on.
- Open the top cover and remove the tool tray to access the battery.
- Get ready your multimeter (read instructions for your multimeter for information).
- Place the red probe on the positive (+) terminal of the 12V battery.
- Place the black probe on the negative (-) terminal of the 12V battery.
A. 12V battery
B. Negative (-) terminal
C. Main switch in ON position
D. Positive (+) terminal
E. Ground lug - Read the multimeter. Note the following:
-
- You should see a reading above 10V; ideally between 11V and 13V.
- A declining voltage reading (going from 10V to 9V) suggests a draining battery.
- If a battery reaches 0, the circuitry in the battery is like the issue. Replace the battery.
